519 Triathaletes….and a dog

Section Divider 519 Triathaletes….and a dog

Rain was threatening all morning, but the triathalon at Lake Bloomington was able to take place on the first Saturday of June, and the Aussie Rescue booth was in place. Several dogs ‘helped’ out at the booth that day—intended to raise the awareness of Australian Shepherds in need of homes—and Brownie won the grand prize. Brownie got a new home. This 5 month old tri-aussie was adopted by a race volunteer and will now spend her forever days in Bloomington, IL. I bet Brownie will be at the July event too, but this time she won’t need to worry about finding a home! She has proven what we all know…it might take 519 people, or 519 phone calls, or 519 postings to find a dog a home. That is what the Aussie Rescue volunteers do, and it puts a smile on their face when, on a rainy Saturday in June, a happy ending is had by all.

The Origins of the Australian Shepherd

Section Divider The Origins of the Australian Shepherd

The name of the Australian Shepherd is misleading - the breed is not from Australia but from American.  The earliest origins of Aussies may be from dogs in the Pyranese mountains somewhere between Spain and France, but the breed as we know it now was developed in the American West during the 19th and 20th centuries.  Although their history is somewhat unclear, the breed probably became known as Australian Shepherds because they were associated with Basque sheepherders who immigrated from Australia to the United States in the 1800's.  The Basque herders were said to have "little blue dogs with bob tails."

The Australian Shepherd was developed as a general, all-purpose ranch working dog.  Ranchers in the American West required a tough, versatile stockdog with endurance and a strong work ethic, and the Aussie was bred to fit this bill.  They were bred to be versatile enough to control all types of livestock in both large and narrow spaces.  Aussies most often worked to move large herds of cattle from summer to winter grazing grounds and back, flushing cattle out of tall grass, and moving flocks of livestock down tight quarter such as chutes and alleys.

Australian Shepherds increased in popularity in the 20th Century as western riding became popular and Aussies were seen in movies and on television as well as at rodeos and horse shows.  The breed has been recognized by various registries since the 1950's, but the American Kennel Club did not recognize the breed until 1991 and finally accepted it into the herding group in 1993.

The sweet companion you’ve been looking for

Section Divider The sweet companion you’ve been looking for

Hi there….my name is Dot. But if you don’t like my name I would be fine with a new one. As long as a home came with the new name. They say I am a very soft and gentle soul, and I guess that is true. I really just like to be petted and to go for easy and slow walks. I am not very interested in other dogs or cats, am housebroken and I am very quiet.

I am a deaf dog, but please don’t hesitate to read on because of that. I am very attentive and am very quiet, I never bark. You will not need to throw the ball or a Frisbee for me…I would just prefer to lay my head on your feet while you pet me. My fur is silky white with a touch of gray….so soft. I have gorgeous blue eyes and will watch you all day long so I know where you are. I am not at all destructive and am quite affectionate.

Perhaps you are looking for a quiet, sweet dog to curl up and watch TV with you, or someone to stroll down to the mailbox with each day. If so then please consider me. I would love to have a home to call my own after spending time in a shelter. I won’t ask for much, just your love each and every day.

Contact AussieRescueIL@gmail.com if Dot is the girl for you.
